On Tuesday (the 8th) we flew up to Auckland. As we flew up from Queenstown we were lucky to be seated on the starboard side of the plane and saw the dramatic southern alps as we flew north, including Mt. Cook, the Tasman glacier and several other glaciers (Fox and Franz Josef among them) – it was true "Lord of the Rings" scenery…
We only had 1 day in Auckland unfortunately as we were flying to San Francisco the next day, but we managed to have a good walk around the city centre and get up the Sky Tower for a twilight view before heading off for dinner down by the quayside. We found a really nice 4 star hotel in Hobson Street (only a block from Sky City) for only 40 quid. It was so cheap because it had only opened 3 days beforehand and they hadn’t finished building the restaurant, or some of the other rooms for that matter. There was a bit of banging in the morning but we were already awake so it didn’t matter and it was a really nice hotel.
It’s a shame we didn’t have longer to explore Auckland as there’s loads to do, but that’s been the story all along on this trip, we’ve just not had enough time. 4 weeks wasn’t really long enough in Oz either as we didn’t get a chance to go to Ayer’s Rock or drive along the great ocean road. Still it’s all stuff we can do next time!
